Hawker Heaven

Chinatown Food Centre
336 Smith St, Singapore
Singapore may have stunning colonial architecture, swanky new hotels, and an up-and-coming art scene, but among in-the-know foodies, the island is renowned for just one thing: its incredibly diverse and delicious array of street food. The best way to get a sampling of the bounty on offer is to make your way to a “hawker center,” or food court devoted entirely to inexpensive, workingman’s food. One of the finest is the Chinatown Food Centre. There are lots of winners among the 100+ vendors, but two standouts are the creamy, comforting Tian Tian Pork Porridge at stall #02-185 and the coconut-scented laksa with cockles as stall #02-94.

Shots and Speakeasies

Jigger and Pony
101 Amoy St, Singapore
There’s not a Singapore Sling in sight at Jigger and Pony, one of the new “speakeasy-style” cocktail dens that’s setting a new standard for quality and sophistication in the city’s drinking scene. Classics and new spins on pre-prohibition drinks made with top-shelf liquor and high-quality ingredients are the default here; the proprietors even make their own grenadine. Settle in and quench your thirst with a “Bitter Gimlet (like a bergamot-kissed gin and tonic), a “Darjeeling Cooler,” or a “Little Red Dot,” a cooling concoction of gin with muddled raspberries, lychee liqueur, grapefruit juice, and Indian rosewater.
