Tune In

The Cobblestone
N. King St., Dublin West, Dublin, 01/872–1799
For some of Dublin’s best traditional music—minus the tourist hordes—along with an expertly pulled pint, make your way to The Cobblestone, a classic Irish ale house in the Northeast Dublin neighborhood of Smithfield. Though the current establishment has only been around about 20 years, the site on which it sits has been a public house for over a century and a half—and that history is reflected in its down-to-earth atmosphere and the welcoming melting pot of its patrons. You can’t go wrong with a Guinness, of course, but if craft beer is more your thing, the bar also has a robust selection of brews from the smaller-but-superb local outfit, Dublin Brewing Company.

By the Book

Winding Stair
40 Lower Ormond Quay, Dublin
Perched two stories above one of the oldest surviving independent bookshops in Dublin, the Winding Stair cafe was long beloved by bookworms and bohemians for its simple fare and superlative views of the Ha’Penny Bridge. But now, following a 2006 reboot by chef Elaine Murphy, it has become one of the city’s true dining destinations. Settle into a sunny chair overlooking the Liffey and enjoy the intimate and unpretentious room and the tempting menu. Seasonally driven and heavy on pristine local ingredients like Dingle Bay crab and Ummera bacon, it should once and for all banish all those “bad Irish food” stereotypes from your head.
