Best Bites

La Cantina
Cannaregio 3689, Campo San Felice
Lebanon has meze, Spain has tapas, and Venice has cicchetti—inexpensive small bites, designed to share, that locals dig into over a midday break or an early evening aperitif. The best way to taste of a range of cicchetti? An impromptu crawl through the city’s bacari, the casual little bars in which the snacks are a main attraction. Some specialize in marinated seafood, others cured meat or cheeses, so there’s something for every craving. One of our favorites is La Cantina,  a cozy spot offering wines by the glass and delicious cicchetti made to order.

It’s a Peach

Harry’s Bar
Calle Vallaresso, 1323,30124 Venezia
Since its founding in 1931, Harry’s Bar has had more than its share of bold name habitués, from Ernest Hemingway to Orson Welles. But the most famous mainstay of this legendary Venice watering hole isn’t a customer, it’s a drink: the Bellini, a blend of white peach purée and Prosecco invented by owner Giuseppe Cipriani in 1948. At the start, Cipriani only served the cocktail in the summer, when peaches were in season, but nowadays, with quality white peach puree available, visitors can order the tipple year-round. Cin cin!
