FAQ: Our Guide to Tipping on Windstar

One of the most common questions we get over here at Windstar’s blog is about the latest update on tipping onboard. With that in mind, here are some answers (and please let us know if you have additional comments in the chat).

The main event

Windstar has two types of gratuities. The first is a daily hotel service charge of $16 per person, and a 15 percent beverage service charge on bar tabs. While these cover the main gratuities, you may tip extra in cash for exceptional service from individuals or contribute to the general crew welfare fund onboard.

Automatic and optional charges

Daily Hotel service charge: $16 per person. This is distributed among all crew members, including wait staff, cabin stewards, and kitchen staff.

Beverage service charge: A 15 percent gratuity is automatically added to all bar tabs and wine purchases.

The “All Inclusive” package includes both daily hotel service charge and the 15 percent beverage service charge.

Tipping extra in cash

For exceptional service: If you receive outstanding service from a specific crew member, you can leave a cash tip for them directly. This is neither expected nor required.

Where to tip: Use cash to tip individual staff for a more personal thank you.

How much: A general guideline is about $5–$10 extra for a room steward or a few dollars for a bartender per drink, or more for exceptional service.

Other tipping tips

Shore excursions: All tips are included in the Windstar Cruises shore excursions pricing. Tipping for exceptional guides or staff on shore excursions will vary depending on the tour and location.

Crew welfare fund: You can also make a donation to the crew welfare fund at the front desk, which helps organize crew events and special occasions..
