The day has finally arrived! Wind Surf emerged fresh from her 18-day refurbishment this Saturday in Philipsburg, St. Maarten. Sparkling with new enhancements, the 310-passenger sailing yacht is cruising its inaugural voyage with a seven-day Yachtsman’s Caribbean voyage.

A stem-to-stern renovation, Wind Surf received updated décor in the public areas, complete with new furnishings, upholstery, art, lighting, wall coverings, carpeting, ceiling finishes, window treatments, and floor coverings. The yacht also premiered two new restaurants on Saturday, the French restaurant Stella Bistro and a new contemporary main restaurant called AmphorA.

Hotel Manager Henri Lemay snapped some photos of the renovation, giving us the first peek at Wind Surf’s new look. Wind Spirit’s debut is up next, completing her dry-dock on December 22nd in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The full fleet-wide renovation is almost complete! In December our fleet will emerge fresh from its $18 million, three yacht, stem-to-stern renovation. While Wind Star was completed in April, Wind Surf will go into dry dock on November 12th.

The 310-passenger flagship sailing yacht will begin its five-day dry dock at Lisnave, a Portuguese shipyard. The yacht will depart for St. Maarten on November 18th and cross the Atlantic, with only crew on board to complete its 13-day wet dock. The first post-renovation voyage, Yachtsman’s Caribbean, will sail on December 1st.

The 148-passenger Wind Spirit will spend its two-week dry dock in Lisnave as well, before starting her wet dock on the December 9th transatlantic crossing. Wind Spirit will arrive in Barbados on December 22nd and start receiving guests for its Jewels of the Windward Islands cruise.

Both sailing yachts will have updated décor in the public areas, complete with new furnishings, upholstery, art, lighting, wall coverings, carpeting, ceiling finishes, window treatments, and floor coverings. The enhanced color palette combines sand and marine shades to contrast with the warmth of wood finishes, elevating the look and feel to casual elegance.

One of the most exciting features of the renovation is the transformation of the main dining room, The Restaurant, into a whole new cuisine experience as AmphorA Restaurant. The venue will be introduced with a redesigned seating layout and state-of-the-art wine display and storage. A new menu will be featured, spotlighting local dishes as well as savory courses such as ling cod, quail delight, and a porcini and truffle fettuccini. The Veranda’s outdoor seating will also be expanded to create an ideal mid-ship area for guests to enjoy breakfast and lunch alfresco. A live-action cooking station will give guests a chance to order exactly what they want. The interior includes a new buffet, new lighting, and epicurean displays.

AmphorA Restaurant

On Wind Surf only, Degrees Restaurant will be transformed into an elegant French Bistro, featuring a new name and menu, details which will be announced soon. The venue will receive an enhanced look with new furniture, flooring, wine display cabinet, and a mix of classic and contemporary pendent lighting. Also onboard Wind Surf, the popular Compass Rose will be redesigned with fresh contemporary furnishings, new flooring, and comfortable chairs and bar stools designed for socializing.

Other enhanced areas on both ships include: The Lounge Bar – will receive sleek, contemporary furniture to match the new tawny, color palette giving a friendly ambiance. Reception Area – will be decorated with a new alabaster centerpiece and pendent lighting. The Pool Bar – is set to be redesigned with a variety of seating options and new awning. By evening the deck transforms into the romantic Candles, where on-deck, candlelit dinners are served. Yacht Club – will be refreshed with new furnishings.

We will be posting pictures to the blog as the yachts go through their renovations, so be sure to check back!

Little did Trish know she would be getting married when she boarded Wind Star in mid-August. Sailing on Windstar Cruises for the first time, Trish and her fiancé of seven years, Ron, came on board for two weeks of relaxing vacation, sailing through Greece and Turkey, and visiting with their old friends, Captain Aristeidis, (‘Aris’ to his friends) and Ruby.

“We were sitting at dinner in Bodrum on one of the first nights with Aris and Ruby, talking over good food and wine, when the idea formed that we should get married on board,” said Trish.

And Captain Aris wanted to be the man to do it. Since the couple was sailing on back-to-back voyages, they decided to do the ceremony in Santorini, with its romantic and picturesque cliffs.

The details quickly came together. They hopped off the yacht in Istanbul to buy wedding rings. Ron picked up a wedding shirt. Trish bought her ‘something new’ in the form of a bracelet from the Wind Star gift shop. Luckily, she had the perfect white dress already packed! Trish even found a ‘wedding planner’ in a new friend made on board, Tina, a producer for BBC, who helped pull everything together. Laurie, another guest sailing on board who Trish and Ron had befriended, happened to be a wedding photographer and offered to take pictures.

As Wind Star anchored in Santorini, there was not a cloud in the sky. Tina ran to shore to pick up fresh orchids from a local florist, a garter and other wedding essentials. The ship’s chef brought up a wedding cake. The champagne was chilled. The sails were unfurled. Captain Aris took his place. The guests on board gathered round.  And then, as the sun set, Trish and Ron were married.

“It was such an honor to be part of the special day,” said Captain Aris.

After the ceremony, Windstar’s signature deck barbeque kicked-off, making it the perfect reception. The party carried on late in the night as guests feasted on lobster and paella and danced to live music. Ron and Trish opened wedding presents, including a romantic lunch in Mykonos the next day, that thirty passengers on board happily contributed to.

“So many of the guests onboard helped make this day special. They ended up becoming friends,” said Trish.

The Deck Barbecue became the couple’s reception

Once the cruise ended, Ron and Trish headed to England for a short honeymoon and to visit Trish’s family to share the good news before they headed back to their home in Dallas.

“The wedding itself was a dream come true. Everything was perfect,” said Trish.

Just another day in the life of a Windstar guest. A journey 180 degrees from ordinary.
